What We Do

An endoscopy nurse works within the endoscopy unit of a hospital or other medical institution in which procedures including an endoscope are used. These miniature cameras are used to view problems within the body, usually originating in the genitourinary system or the digestive system. A nurse’s responsibility within this unit usually falls under the roles associated with sedation and post-procedure care. Working within different medical centers will give endoscopy nurses different responsibilities and roles to play within a procedure as some doctors give more independence to nurses within this profession, while others prefer to do much of the work themselves. Nurses who work in this position are also referred to as gastroenterology nurses due to the area of focus during procedures.

Work Environment

An endoscopy nurse may work in a private clinic, a hospital, or another type of medical care facility in which these procedures are performed. Due to the specialized nature of this procedure, not all medical clinics have departments suited to endoscopy work, which leads many nurses to find positions within larger hospitals for this field of work. The patients undergoing endoscopy procedures may be in pain, or have an illness that could spread, so nurses in this department must be wary and keep hygiene and sterilization in mind at all times, for the safety of the patient and the medical staff.

How to Become

To become an endoscopy nurse, you must first complete an Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science in nursing degree to become eligible to write the national licensure examination to become a registered nurse. Once registered nursing status is confirmed, graduates may continue to take training through an endoscopy program, or in some cases, simply having experience working in an endoscopy setting can be relevant, which means choosing this field of focus during a work term. This training will include courses in biology, microbiology, endoscopy, among others, as well as practical hands on training through a simulated experience and/or a hospital practicum.
